What starts as the standard RPG fare of delivering iron bars and sacks of grain develops into clearing out bandit strongholds and raiding parties made up of the creatures that inhabited the caverns before humans ever found it. The specifics of why you might have been cast out are deliberately left vague, but from speaking to the inhabitants of the vast caverns you develop a distinct impression of the surface world. The bare bones of the story is that you are a party of exiles, forced into the underground kingdom of Avernum by the draconian policies of the aboveground Empire. Now, even people who have played the game might baulk at that comparison, but hear me out, I think my reasoning is sound. Without exaggeration, I feel that the closest modern equivalent in terms of story is Fallout: New Vegas. The strongest aspect by far is the setting. If you answer yes to 2-3 of the points above, you have a good chance of enjoying Avernum. Have you ever played a pen and paper RPG and had fun? I can only recommend this game to people with several caveats:Īre you a big fan of point and click isometric RPGs?Īre you more interested in story and worldbuilding than minute-to-minute gameplay?ĭo you enjoy games that expect you to meet it halfway in order to enjoy it? This is really one of those 'marmite' games where you're either going to like it or not.
